Is VR ready for mainstream use in language learning?
In the second edition of the Fluent Forever Book, I discuss the importance of VR in the future of language learning, while also noting that we’re not there yet. The tools aren’t refined enough or easy enough to use, and the amount of work you have to put in to MAKE them work for you makes them (currently) unrealistic for mainstream educational use. That will change someday, and when it does, I’ll say so on this page.
For now, the answer is No. We’re not there yet.
But… if I want to do the early adopter thing, where do I go?
For those of you who are early adopters and like playing with technology before it’s ready for everyone else, go explore the VR online communities. Chat with people there, and see if you can find some folks who’d like to do a language exchange with you. As of this book’s publication, the largest of these communities is in VR Chat, though I personally prefer Resonite for its super-nice community and expansive world-building capabilities.
